How to Knit in a Heatwave

Hi everyone,

This month has been a scorcher! The most asked question at the shop recently has been 'Do you keep knitting in the heat?' The short answer is yes! (I know i'm an addict) but I have some top tips to make knitting a little more bearable when the temperature rises.

How to knit through a heatwave

  • Natural plant fibres feel much cooler in your hands than heavy wool. Cotton, linen and silk or a blend of these work beautifully.
  • Instead of a big, thick jumper sitting in your lap, try smaller projects. My personal favorite summer knits are socks!
  • Knit with a lightweight gauge. Anything over DK tends to get too hot and heavy.
  • If you are using interchangeable metal needle tips, pop them in the fridge to keep them cool or switch to wood or bamboo needles which tend to be less slippery!
  • Knit first thing in the morning before the temperature starts to soar, or last thing at night when the sun goes down.
  • Pick an easy pattern. When we get too hot our concentration tends to waver and it can be hard to concentrate. Knit something super easy and repetitive that you can pick up and put down with ease.
  • If it's really too much but you need to feed your knitting addiction, grab a knitting magazine, knitting book or watch a knitting podcast with a nice iced drink!

P.S If small projects or summer yarns don't appeal, use this time to knit swatches for any planned winter projects. You will thank yourself later!

Happy Knitting,

Sarah x
