Back in 2018 I designed this blanket as to be taught as part of a beginners knitting course. I wanted a pattern that would build on skills each week at a steady pace for new knitters. I also wanted it to be big enough so students would get lots of practice, modular enough so if a mistake was made it was not a huge loss, interesting enough to not get boring AND include many of the most common knitting techniques found in patterns. A big ask! I couldn't find any existing patterns I thought were just right. That was when I knew I needed to design and knit my own patchwork blanket pattern. The Knit Yourself Calm Blanket and course was born.
I originally taught the course at Surrey Art School and now I continue to teach the very same course (with a few tweaks!) at my own yarn shop here in Grayshott. There's been so many lovely versions knitted and I've been asked and asked for this as a stand alone kit to be purchased by anyone. Even the most experienced knitters want to created their own version. The finished blanket including the border is appox 1m x 1m but you can make this as big as you like. Just add more squares! Finished size will vary slightly according to your gauge.
So I have put together some kits so no matter where you are in your knitting journey you can enjoy this relaxing, meditative project. Our sample blanket squares were knit with Rowan Superwash Worsted and we used a 4.5mm needle. Superwash Worsted is a great yarn that's 100% wool and machine washable!
