Sandnes Garn Alpakka Følgetråd – 100% laceweight Alpaca Yarn is a beautifully soft alternative to silk mohair!

Alpakka Følgetråd is a luxurious, lightweight companion yarn made from 100% alpaca, designed to be knitted alongside another yarn to add softness, warmth and a lovely, smooth finish without the fluffy halo of traditional silk mohair. It can also be used by itself as a laceweight, non-fluffy yarn for detailed laceweight shawls and patterns.

Perfect for knitters who prefer a less fuzzy look, Alpakka Følgetråd is a wonderful choice for sweaters, cardigans and other knitted garments where you want extra softness without lots of fluff.

The name Følgetråd means companion thread, which describes exactly how this clever little yarn is intended to be used.

Why we love it! Alpakka Følgetråd feels soft and quite silky and is very lightweight which means you get loads of meterage per ball. It's a great (non fluffy) alternative to mohair or suri alpaca and adds softness and warmth when held with another yarn. It offers a smooth knitting experience and glides along the needles beautifully!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alpakka Følgetråd a good alternative to silk mohair?

Yes! Sandnes Garn designed Alpakka Følgetråd as an alternative to Tynn Silk Mohair for knitters who don't want a fluffy finish. It adds softness and warmth without creating the same pronounced halo. Always check your tension when substituting yarns.

Can I use Alpakka Følgetråd instead of Tynn Silk Mohair?

In many projects, yes. Alpakka Følgetråd can be used as a companion yarn in patterns that call for silk mohair, although the finished fabric will have a different texture and appearance. We recommend knitting a tension swatch before starting.

Can you knit Alpakka Følgetråd on its own?

Yes! Alpakka Følgetråd can be used by itself as a laceweight, non-fluffy yarn for detailed laceweight shawls and patterns. Alpaca fibres do not bounce back like sheeps wool does. This means when washed and blocked this yarn will remain relaxed and open in the shape set making it perfect for detailed lacework.

Is Alpakka Følgetråd mohair-free?

Yes! Alpakka Følgetråd is made from 100% alpaca, making it a lovely option for knitters looking for a companion yarn without mohair or silk.

What does Følgetråd mean?

Følgetråd is Norwegian for companion thread. It's a fine yarn designed to be held together with another yarn to change the softness, warmth and texture of your finished knitting.
