Slipover Club - Knitting Course | 5 weeks

Leading on from the success of 'My First Sweater Club', we are launching the Slipover Club! Join this 5 week knitting course here at The Knit Lounge and knit your very own Slipover. Whether you call it a vest, a tank, a sleeveless sweater, or a slipover this will be the most versatile piece in your wardrobe. 

If you’ve mastered the basics of casting on, knitting, purling and casting off and you are ready to move on from scarves, step into the wonderful world of knitting your own garments! The course will take you gently through all the techniques needed to make your own (well fitting) slipover! 

This is an ideal club to join if you want to continue building on the core techniques you have learned in Sweater Club! Although many people would say a slipover is just a sweater without arms, the way we knit it for a perfect fit is entirely different. The skills you will learn on this course will help build your knowledge of garment construction, fit, and design, so you don’t feel stuck in a knitting rut with top-down patterns. 

The course will run for 5 weeks on Saturday from 4.30pm - 6.30pm on the following dates (outlined below) Each session is 2 hours and there will be time between each class to continue knitting your sweater and complete your homework! (Homework is not essential but to get the most out of the course we do recommend it.) I will be knitting my own version of the slipover alongside you, and I cannot wait to see which colours we all choose.

Dates and class contents:

31st May - Swatching, picking a size, casting on, working and shaping the back yoke 

2 week break to swatch and work back yoke 

14th June - Picking up and working the front shoulders, neck shaping joining in the round.

2 week break to finish main body

28th June - Starting the twisted rib and split hem.

5th July - Picking up for the neck, neck options and the Italian bind off

12th July - Picking up for the armholes, italian bind off recap, weaving in ends

What's the Pattern?

The pattern we will be making is the Terrazzo Slipover by the PetiteKnit. This slipover is a lovely classic shape that is worked flat to start and then joined to work in the round seamlessly. This slipover can be customised depending on your own preference. The length can be adjusted, and you can choose to do the full turtle neck or a regular ribbed collar. You can also opt to forgo the split hem and make it continual. 

The pattern is NOT included in the course cost. You will need to purchase it online or we can purchase a copy for you via the Ravelry in-store sales service. We can even print it for you!

What do I need to bring?

Yarn: You can use any yarn you like to make this pattern, and I recommend a DK weight yarn for the best finish. The original pattern uses a DK yarn held with a mohair but that is totally optional. I've put together a list of substitute yarns that will be emailed out to you as there are so many possibilities! 

If you buy your yarn with us you will also get a 10% discount.  Alternatively, if you already have DK yarn and/or a mohair you would like to use this is absolutely ok too!

Needles:  You will need 4mm circular needles. I recommend circular needle lengths of approximately 40cm and 90cm tip to tip. Please note that depending on your gauge you may need different needle sizes than those specified in the pattern. Gauge and needle size will be discussed at length in session one.
