Summer Shawl-along | Briochealicious

The Briochealicious Shawl is the perfect pattern for The Knit Lounge's 2nd virtual Summer Shawl-along!

This year we will be knitting a fabulous brioche design from one of my favourite designers, Andrea Mowry. Say hello to 'Briochealicious' This shawl is great if you are new to the brioche technique as the two colour brioche stripes are separated by relaxing garter stitch and the pattern is designed to be an easy introduction to the technique. Brioche can be intimidating but if you are a intermediate knitter or confident beginner this could be the perfect challenge for you.

This years shawl pattern uses fingering/ 4ply weight yarn and there are so many ways to add your own flair to this design. You could use a colour changing yarn like the Schoppel ZauberBall for your brioche sections, you could make each section a different colour or you could add some texture with mohair or suri alpaca. You could go high contrast colours so the brioche sections really pops or you could experiment with low contrast colours for a more subtle striped look. For a super luxurious version, the Cardiff Cashmere Classic would work extremely well at this gauge. This shawl is also a great way to use up any single hand dyed skiens you may have. It would also work with any sock yarn.

What is a shawl-along?

A shawl-along is a group of people knitting the same shawl pattern at the same time and learning together as part of a community. You can feel free to add your own modifications but we will all be using the same base pattern. This shawl-along is fully guided so there will be demos and tutorials as well as lots of general yarn advice. The shawl-along is online only so you can join from anywhere in the world!

The Briochealicious Shawl details

This beautiful pattern is Briochealicious Shawl by Andrea Mowry. This is a crescent shaped design which uses garter stitch sections and 2-colour brioche sections to create bands of texture and colour. The shawl is a generous size and can easily be wrapped around the neck like a traditional style scarf. You can buy the pattern from Ravelry or pop in-store and we can purchase and print for you! You must buy your own copy of the pattern to join the shawl-along.

I will also be answering any questions you may have in the video call sessions.

What time?

The KAL will 'officially' start on the 26th June and will run for 4 weeks. Feel free to swatch or pick yarn before the first session but if you are feeling unsure we will chat about yarn choices and combos in the first session. You might get inspired by other peoples colours and it's always really fun to see everyone's plans. The weekly video call will be on Fridays at 8pm. The dates of the video meet-ups are:

26th June, 3rd July, 10th July, 17th July

You can knit at any pace you like. There is no schedule or deadlines. There is no pressure to finish when the KAL does. 

What are the details?

• We are setting up a shawl-a-long Instagram group chat where everyone is welcome to share ideas, tips and tricks, yarn choices and to ask any questions. 

• If there is a technique or problem you are having you can ask there and I will answer and/or demo in the next video call.  

• The full cost of the Shawl-Along is redeemable against your yarn/ needles purchase so the teaching and video calls and are technically totally free! 

• Once you sign up you will receive an email with a unique coupon code that you can use to purchase your materials. 

• You will also get a link to the video calls and a list of suggested yarn options (which for this pattern are pretty endless!)

This KAL would suit confident beginners or intermediates that already have a good understanding of how to knit, purl and basic increases and decreases.
